The candle that lit itself
One second, the candle was out and cold and then a moment later there it was, glowing with life. My friends and I stood in stunned silence, caught somewhere in between disbelief and awe.
In a place already brimming with magic, the impossible had just happened. One of our candles had lit itself.
A few years ago, some friends and I took a trip to Big Sur and stayed in the most gorgeous yurt overlooking the Pacific Ocean. There was an outdoor tub on the property and we were enchanted by the idea of taking a midnight bath and staring up at the infinite sea of stars.
There was no outdoor light for our bath so we used the tall candles that were inside the yurt.
One of them was burned almost all the way down in the glass and as fate would have it, the long barbecue lighter that was there, gave out. We gathered the other candles and as we were getting ready to head outside to the tub something stopped us in our tracks — warm, flickering light coming from that one candle that we couldn’t light. We all froze, half expecting one of us to confess to some clever trick but it became clear that none of us had done it. We just stood there in complete fascination unsure of what to say.
It was one of those experiences that just felt like…
Magic
Our curiosity and wonder kept us up late, leading us to look up any information that we could find about the yurt. We discovered that the architect, Mickey Muennig, had just passed away a few weeks before our stay.
In that moment of realization it felt like his spirit reached across the universal realms to gift us that small spark of glimmering light, reminding us that magic isn’t only confined to imagination and it’s not just something that’s written in fairytales, but that its woven into the fabric of existence waiting to reveal itself. A reminder that the unseen can speak louder than anything we can explain with reason ✨
